Roulette odds for beginners

In the exiting world of casino games, one of the most difficult parts of roulette for beginners and novices are all of the different types of bets on the layout and the odds that they pay. But it really isn’t as confusing as what it first appears because there are two areas of the table in terms of betting and these are called the “layout” and “outside chances or bets”.

So let’s get on grip with how casino roulette works. The “layout” consists of the numbers 1 to 36 and zero (also double zero if the wheel has it). However outside chances are simply the bets that are placed around the outer edge of the “layout”. The outside chances incorporate all of the even money chances which are red, black, odds, evens, high and low. These bets when placed pay even money so a $10 bet pays $10 and so forth.

These bets pay even money due to the fact that there are 18 red numbers and 18 black numbers, 18 low numbers and 18 high numbers and 18 odd numbers and 18 even numbers. The only number that is not a part of that is zero which is effectively the house edge as it creates a 37th number where the payouts only reflect 36 numbers.

The bets on the outside chances also have columns and dozens as well and it is possible to bet on a dozen or a column which represents twelve numbers and twelve numbers out of thirty six is reduced to 1/3 and so the odds for something that happens once in every three is obviously 2/1. So the pay off for betting a dozen or a column is 2-1 and not evens like with the other outside bets.

Where it can get complicated for novices is with the odds on the layout for the individual numbers. All what you have to remember in this instance is that there are five different types of odds based on certain types of bets! These odds are 35/1…17/1…..11/1….8/1 and 5/1. The odds of 35/1 reflect the chances of a player placing a bet on a certain number and that number winning. The odds of 17/1 are for bets that incorporate two numbers like the 14-17 split number for instance.

The 11/1 odds are for “street” betting which is a row of numbers like the 1,2,3 row for instance and betting on three numbers pays 11/1 and so placing three chips on the 1,2,3 street would win 33 chips and return 36 chips with your bet back. Each bet represents the amount of numbers being bet on with your bet also being returned. So four chips on a corner bet pays 8/1 and that returns 32 chips which is 36 chips with your bet back.

The odds and the layout in roulette do seem confusing to the novice at first but it is easily remembered with just minimal work. Every single number on the layout adds up to 666 when totalled. So it is no wonder then that casino roulette is sometimes referred to as the “Devil’s game”.
